Is it legal to ask for donations online for a non-profit making organisation in the UK?

We are a newly set up non-profit making organisation for a free online wiki project in the UK. In order to make the wiki project self-reliant, we plan to encourage users to make donations online whatever they can. I was wondering if there are any legal requirements in order to raise funds in such a way. Please note that we are not a registered charity and we do not think we will qualify for a charity status.

There is no such thing as non-profit orgs in the UK. You are probably a voluntary or community group. There are no regulations around requesting donations online, the only restrtion is that you cannot describe yourself as charitable.
